What are Gravity Blankets Made of?

What is a gravity blanket made of?

Unlike a simple blanket or quilt, a gravity blanket contains some material inside that gives it that extra weight that makes it special (and beneficial).

Beyond this material, however (which we will analyze later), a gravity blanket is made up of two other parts: the inner blanket and the blanket cover.

When these three parts come together correctly, the result is a gravity blanket that exerts constant and gentle pressure and maintains the ideal body temperature so you can enjoy a quality and restful sleep every night.

In this article we analyze the materials with which gravity blankets are usually made, as well as those that we use for our own Prosleep Gravity.

Let's start!

The 3 parts that make up a gravity blanket

1. The gravity blanket

A gravity blanket can be made from any fabric, however not all options are of the same quality and ideal for sleeping.

Let's look at some examples of fabrics:

Wool is a fabric choice that would be more suitable for those living in the colder regions of Greece, as it has the property of trapping heat and providing warmth. This fact makes wool fabric attractive for these situations, but it has two limitations:

  1. Cannot be used in summer
  2. Not suitable for those who sweat in their sleep

Minky is a very soft and very durable fabric made of microfiber . It is ideal for those who get cold at night but needs care not to combine it with a cover made of the same fabric because it may be warmer than it should be for a quality sleep.

Bamboo is one of the coolest fabrics you can find, it resembles silk in texture and has a high cost. It is one of the best choices for a summer blanket. Exclusively for summer.

Cotton is probably the best fabric choice for making a gravity blanket as it is durable and "breathable" so as not to keep body temperature trapped during the night. It is natural, hypoallergenic and soft to the touch.

For our blankets, we use 100% natural cotton, which is tested and certified by the international organization OEKO-TEX® as a completely safe fabric for human skin.

2. The gravity blanket cover

The blanket cover is an equally important part of the gravity blanket as it determines the temperature that can develop when you are under it, the texture and the ease of washing.

All the fabrics we saw above for making the gravity blanket are also available for its cover, and even more.

Very briefly:

  • Minky for those who want a super soft and cuddly blanket that will keep them warm at night
  • Cotton which remains a constant value
  • Bamboo which has a silky texture but is only ideal for summer blankets
  • Silk which is excellent in texture, but has a high cost and the way it is collected is somewhat questionable ethically

For the cover of our Prosleep Gravity blanket, we use Minky fabric, which after study and many nights of testing, we found that in combination with the cotton fabric of the blanket, it is the best choice for the winter in Greece. Furthermore, it is pleasant to the touch, comfortable and easy to wash.

Regarding our Gravity Junior children's blanket, we chose 100% cotton fabric for the cover.

3. The material that gives weight to the blanket

The entire surface of the blanket is divided into large cells which contain the material that gives the blanket its weight.

This material is usually:

  • Plastic pellets
  • Glass beads
  • Steel balls

Polypropylene plastic pellets

Plastic pellets look like very small pebbles and are made of polypropylene, which means they are safe and non-toxic.

However, compared to the other two options, plastic pellets are not considered the best choice because:

  • they are large in size and give an uneven texture to the surface of the blanket (bumps) which is annoying
  • they do not distribute the weight correctly and equally on the blanket
  • they make noise when they move

Glass beads

Glass beads are a high-quality choice and are what we use to add weight to Prosleep gravity blankets.

They are extremely small in size, resembling sand, and have the property of filling the cells of the blanket in a gentle, gentle manner so as not to disturb a person with sensory sensitivities .

The glass beads are hypoallergenic and perfectly distribute the weight of the blanket from edge to edge so that Deep Tactile Pressure is effective throughout the body.

Steel balls

Finally, there are also steel pellets, which are essentially iron pellets that have been heat treated.

Although they are extremely soft to the touch, they are large in size, cause lumps in the blanket, and can be noisy when they hit each other - not so ideal when you want to sleep.

Sewing quality makes the difference

The difference between a cheap and an expensive gravity blanket is not only limited to the fabrics and materials used, but also to the quality of sewing.

Most important of all.

If the stitching is not good and if the glass beads (or any other material) in the cells have not been stored properly, then they will start leaking from the very first night, filling the sheets and causing you irritation.
